Living 2005

2005
This year my mantra has largely been
“Live life and use technology as if it is the year 2005”.

By and large I’m getting there – My car has a lot of technology built in. I’ve got wireless internet at home. I can surf from anywhere in my house. I’ve streamlined my ability to migrate across various computers (I’ve used at least 4 different computers as a primary machine in the past half year) by using online services such as Google Reader, Google Mail and other tools. I’ve also got my iPod, kitted out with an iTrip for broadcast and an iTalk for recording.

Sure there are probably still a lot of places I can improve, but at least I’m trying.

And then I look around at the world that surrounds me, and I’ve managed to identify a whole slew of problems where society is not living like it’s 2005:

  • The easy ones : poverty, unemployment, war etc…
  • Dial-up modems – these should have been banned years ago (Thanks for nothing Telkom). In general bandwidth in South Africa is non-existent.
  • No user-centric design and ergonomics in the average work environment.
  • No successful online music store in South Africa
  • Non-existent South African web services and location-based services – my kingdom for an API to maps of South Africa.
  • People still queue at banks/department stores to do simple financial transactions
  • Too many cars with only one person in them on the roads (Lack of public transport)
  • Phone (mobile and landline) costs are way too high, where is Push-To-Talk?
  • Micropayments are still not really a reality.
  • Telecommuting is largely frowned upon. (because large companies lack the expertise and foresight to set it up)
  • Oh, there’s a lot more – I’ll post ’em as I come across them.

Add comments if you think of more ways in which we are not living up to our era…

Put Jonga Search in Firefox’s Search Bar

Jonga and Firefox

Today I wanted to perform a search on Jonga.co.za, South Africa’s newest search engine. I, however, really did not feel like opening another tab in Firefox and typing out ‘double-you double-you double-you dot jay oh’ etc. etc.. – I was in serious lazy mode, so instead I created a handy Search Engine addition for Firefox’s Search Bar.

And now you can get it too!
Just click “Jonga Search” on this page to install.

Batman Begins

At long last I saw Batman Begins on Sunday, and what a good show it was! With an excellent storyline, intense special effects, and the perfect balance of convincing acting, this is without a doubt the best Batman movie yet.

Here’s hoping the new Superman movie lives up to the same high standard.

Gold Reef City

Gold Reef City and Johannesburg

On Friday Brad, Nadia, Willem and I spent the afternoon at Gold Reef City.

Unfortunately the length of our visit could not be too long because we visited the Apartheid Museum earlier that day. Added to that we had an incompetent waiter or two where we tried to have lunch which delayed our afternoon even further.

We definitely tried to squeeze too much into our day, but fortunately it was not a complete waste – we still had time for a couple of rides, including the “Anaconda”, which, to review it with my own quote I sent from my phone, was ‘Fucking hectic. Wow!’.

The Hacker’s Wine

I don’t check Stormhoek’s website that often (note to self: add feed to new feed reader), but I was wonderfully surprised when I read on gapingvoid about a few new “hacks” being implemented at Stormhoek.

Stormhoek Wines

Here’s the new intro on the site:
‘new zealand has the best tech for making white wine. but south africa has better grapes. so obviously the “hacker” thing to do was to move the tech over to south africa and see what happens. voila! stormhoek. “freshness matters.” available in the u.k. at asda, threshers, waitrose, majestic, sainsbury’s and oddbins. hope you like.’

There are also plans afoot to funk up the Stormhoek bottle’s design.

Rock on Stormhoek.

On a side note, for reasons to complex to explain I kinda lost access to my review of my Stormhoek freebie, but with any luck I’ll be able to post it next week.
